Abstract

Guinea pig Peyer's patches contain lymphocytes which demonstrate B cell markers in that they are immunoglobulin bearing and form erythrocyte antibody complement complex rosettes. These Peyer's patches also have lymphocytes with a T cell marker; that is, they are killed by heterologous anti T cell serum. In addition, tissue cltures of the cell population as a whole were greatly stimulated by phytohemaglutinin and concanavalin A, properties ordinarily associated with T cell; the cells were minimally stimulated by endotoxin, a property suggesting the presence of B cells. These data showing both B and T cells further support a secondary lymphoid role for the Peyer's patch in the adult guinea pig.
