Impact of the 1862 Morrill Land-Grant College Act on Chemistry Education in the United States

Abstract

The Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862 revolutionized public higher education in the United States by giving a funding source to the States to found institutions whose missions would be the education of the working class, primarily in practical fields such as agriculture, science, military science, and engineering. The goal of the Act was to create a better-educated citizenry who would be able to apply this learning to increase agricultural and industrial productivity. The Act had a profound impact on the teaching of chemistry in the United States. This paper will give an overview of the creation of the Morrill Act and highlight a few examples of its impact on chemical education in the United States.
