The use of tetra-n-butylammonium chloride or bromide as a solid/liquid phase-transfer agent and ion-pair separation catalyst has a dramatic accelerating effect on the reactions of poly(dichlorophosphazene) with sodium alkoxides or aryl oxides. This allows the synthesis of hitherto inaccessible high molecular weight polyphosphazenes or the preparation of known polymers under unusually mild experimental conditions. The same principles apply to the preparation of small-molecule cyclophosphazenes.
