Abstract
Because of its high theoretical hydrogen storage capacity (7.6 wt %), magnesium is amongst the most attractive materials for hydrogen storage. A novel in-situ catalyst deposition method that improves hydrogen uptake and release kinetics, was developed for depositing various catalysts (Pd, Pt and Ru) on the magnesium particles through a simple wet chemistry process. XRD and SEM characterizations indicated that nano-sized metal particles were deposited on the outer surface of the magnesium particles. Both the hydriding and dehydriding kinetics of magnesium were improved significantly after depositing the catalysts on the outer surface of the magnesium particles. Among Pd, Pt and Ru, palladium showed the best catalytic effect.
