Abstract
This paper describes a method for assessing the information density and efficiency of hyperspectral imaging systems. The approach computes the information density of the acquired signal as a function of the hyperspectral system design, signal-to-noise ratio, and statistics of the scene radiance. Information efficiency is the ratio of the information density to the data density. The assessment can be used in system design - for example, to optimize information efficiency with respect to the number of spectral bands. Experimental results illustrate that information efficiency exhibits a single distinct maximum as a function of the number of spectral bands, indicating the design with peak information efficiency.
