Abstract

The concept of multiple barrier systems for nuclear waste isolation includes backfill or overpack materials surrounding nuclear waste containers to minimize the treat of hazardous radioactive waste elements from reaching man's environment. This article presents a study of potential backfill materials including phillipsite, clinoptilolite, mordenite, montmorillonites, vermiculites, chlorite, kaolinite, labradorite, and shales. Refs.
