History education as a research field has grown considerably over the past three decades. The expanding international scope of the field is equally remarkable. In this introductory chapter, the handbook editors offer observations on this growth as well as the opportunities and challenges the field may face in the future. They identify major themes and issues in history education that frame the organization of this handbook and briefly discuss how the chapters align within this structure.
