INTRODUCTION TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.

Expert systems, a promising branch of Al, has grown substantially in the past three years. Specialists in industrial engineering (IE) and manufacturing are beginning to use this technology as a means of solving problems in their domains. Several prototype systems are being built in the areas of facilities layout, maintenance and fault diagnosis. The solutions of most industrial engineering problems are not deterministic, and many alternate courses of action exist. The solution adopted usually depends on the expertise of the problem solver. Many problems in the IE domain are amenable to solution via intelligent expert systems. This article gives an introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI).
