Long-range pipe imaging with a guided wave focal scan

Abstract

The phased array focus scan has received considerable attention in nondestructive testing (NDT) during the last couple of decades. Most ultrasonic phased array apparatus utilize bulk waves. An alternative to bulk waves is guided waves, whose energy is confined in boundaries. Guided waves are able to propagate along very long boundaries and have the potential to test entire structures, such as plates and pipes. In this paper, a guided wave phased array system is used to achieve focal scans of pipes. The system was designed to focus at any predetermined position in a pipe. By revolving the focal point around the pipe at different distances, a whole- focus scan of the pipe is obtained. A pipe image can then be constructed from the scanning results.
