In recent times different forms of glass such as float glass, glass ceramics, photochromic glass, low-E glass, nuclear-waste glass, photonic waveguides and optical-fiber amplifiers. There are new glasses poised for entry into the market such as metallic glasses, chalcogenide glasses, telluride and germinate glasses. Also in advanced stages of development are new glasses that contain nanocrystals, bioglasses and bioglass-ceramics, less-brittle glasses and hybrid glass/polymer nanocomposites. Glass also is the material for photonic substrates wherein waveguides, lasers, amplifiers, optical logic circuits and storage devices will most certainly be integrated for enhanced function lower cost in the near future.
