Abstract

Lyme disease is a multisystem illness. The manifestations occur in stages and are not unique to this disease. Because of this, the diagnosis may be difficult to make. The immunologic and epidemiologic characteristics of this tick-borne spirochetal illness are important in assessing the risk of acquiring the disease and understanding current diagnostic tools and difficulties. These factors must all be taken into consideration when diagnosing and treating Lyme disease.
