Minimizing induced drag of rectangular, additively manufactured wings

Abstract

The following work presents the simultaneous derivation of lift distribution and wing structural weight distribution for minimum induced drag. A rectangular wing is modelled as a finite set of adjacent horseshoe vortices, allowing the mathematics of the problem to be handled with matrix algebra. A relationship between local bending moment and wing structure is developed for rectangular, additively-manufactured wings with symmetric airfoils. The optimization problem is posed to constrain the internal wing structure between a maximum and minimum volume fraction.
