Abstract

With recent advances in micro-electro-mechanical devices and energy storage technologies, low Reynolds number micro-air vehicles could provide practical solutions to a variety of missions within the next decade. Small, low-energy vehicles with minimal operational risk to people and property are desirable for smooth integration of unmanned systems into mainstream use for applications such as firefighting, search and rescue, agricultural planning, and aerial videography. Towards this goal, the authors will discuss the design and fabrication of several fixed- and flapping-wing micro-air vehicles with a focus on mission-based conceptual design. The transition of key enabling technologies into flying prototypes and experimental performance results will also be presented.
