Mixing and compaction temperatures for Superpave mixes

Abstract

Some modified asphalt binders exhibit a phenomenon known as pseudoplasticity, where viscosity depends on shear rate. Thus, at high shear rates that occur during mixing and compaction it may not be necessary to use very high temperatures. A research was conducted to determine the shear rate during compaction such that the effect of this parameter could be included during viscosity measurements. The use of shear rates experienced by the binders during compaction led to reasonable mixing and compaction temperatures for hot mix asphalt with modified asphalt binders. The application of the shear rate concept rather than the traditional approach used for unmodified binders can reduce the mixing and compaction temperatures between nearly 10° and 30°C, depending on the type and the amount of the modifier. Since most of the modified asphalt binders are shear thinning at high temperatures, their viscosity values decreased with increasing shear rate. The effect of shear rate should be considered for viscosity measurements to calculate the viscosity values during compaction.
