Modern methods for time study

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

Contrary to popular thought, time study is not a dying science. Although, there might not be as much ongoing research focusing on the theoretical aspects of time study, there are considerable advancements in the practical or applied aspects, especially in the use new technology to improve and to simplify the process, such as software tools and data entry devices. This paper will compare the most common software tools and apps presently available. They can be divided in two major groups: 1) the professional level, full-featured programs that cost $1, 000 or more and 2) the inexpensive (less $5) apps that are being developed for smart phones. The latter category can be subdivided into two subcategories: 2a) relatively professional-level apps with more features and regular updates and 2b) simpler apps with few features (basic stopwatch function) and no updates. The latter will not be specifically discussed here. Each of the better software tools is described below in greater detail (in descending cost order) with summary comparison provided in the last slide. Note that many of the inexpensive apps are much more recent than the workhorse program and perfectly fine for basic time study.
