Since there is a lack of specific instruments to measure different motivations for sport therapy in cardiac rehabilitation, the aim of this study was to develop a motivational questionnaire and to examine its psychometric properties. The questionnaire consists of 18 items concerning positive and negative, action-related and achievement-related incentives of physical activity in sport therapy. Based on data of 273 persons, who participated in an inpatient cardiac rehabilitation programm, conclusions are drawn concerning reliability and validity. Principal component analysis showed a four-factor solution with factors labeled "Intrinsic Motivation", "Achievement Motivation", "Health-related Motivation", and "Social Motivation". Internal consistency coefficients ranged from 0.80 to 0.86, indicating good reliability. The scales of sport motivation were correlated with measures of physical ability (left-ventricular ejection fraction, exercise echocardiogram) at programm end and point at possibilities to raise the effectiveness of cardiac sport therapy.
