Movement awareness: An analysis of the gestures installation game

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

This paper is about an installation game currently in development titled GESTURES. The GESTURES project is a study of movement in the context of the arts. It aims to create an interactive experience requiring sequences of gestures, choreographed movements learned through repetition and optimization. Custom input devices provide the participant with an experience of hand-eye coordination inspired by the strategies of post-modern dance phrasing, thus placing GESTURES at the intersection of performance, game design, interactive art and biomechanics. The paper asks the following question: How can digital interactive systems inform us about our human movements on an experiential level? More specifically, how can an installation with custom hardware and software help bring awareness to a participant of the sequential steps between thought movement, physical movement and computational movement?
