Abstract

A Zeeman slower has been used to magnetically compensate for the changing Doppler shift in a decelerating atomic beam which can be easily reconfigured as experimental conditions change because each of the 10 identical segments in the electromagnet is independently adjustable. Once the desired magnetic field shape is determined, the appropriate currents that create that created that magnetic field must be found. The slowing of a 6Li beam using the closed cooling transition where the velocity distribution was measured by a weak probe beam from a diode laser is presented.
