Multidisciplinary design optimization

Abstract

Industry, government, and academic collaborations have advanced multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) and broadened its applications to space systems, underwater vehicles, and future aircraft concepts. SGI and Ford integrated parallel programming and response surface models for rapid visualization of design alternatives to enable design steering during MDO. Penn state is developing an optimization approach for morphing aircraft that places actuators and structural members in the internal wing structure to obtain large spanwise shape changes. EADS Military Aircraft and the European Active Aeroelastic Aircraft Structures project is also using MDO to develop new concepts for different types of airplanes.
