Networking for real-time flexible manufacturing systems

Abstract

Although networking enhances operational flexibility of integrated manufacturing systems, network-induced delays could degrade the dynamic performance of real-time processes. Therefore, a factory communication network should be designed so as to obtain a trade-off between induced delays and capacity utilization. The impact of network-induced delays on real-time control systems was investigated by simulation, and the results have been reported in our earlier publications. Experimental verification of some of the simulation results in a manufacturing system network is presented.
