Abstract

There has been a strong and growing interest in the use of anion exchange membranes for electrochemical technologies. A key part of the research in this burgeoning sub-field is the search for polymeric anion exchange membranes that are stable, highly conductive, and scalable to quantities that are useful for cell engineering. Our group has been one of the pioneers in the design and scale-up of a number of different anion exchange membrane platforms based on commercially-relevant polymeric substrates. We have devised scalable post-polymerization modification chemistry to covert inexpensive polymers to performancecompetitive anion exchange membranes and have used this platform to increase conductivity, improve mechanical properties and decrease water uptake. This range of new anion exchange membrane structures is currently being evaluated in cell testing for various devices and being evaluated for further scale-up activities.
