At 600°C, NOx was found to catalyze the partial oxidation of both methane and ethane by dioxygen to form formaldehyde as the predominant oxygenated product. The yield of oxygenates from methane was over 11%. The yield increased to over 16% when a trace of ethane (0.7%) was added to the gas mixture. As might be expected, the yield of oxygenates from ethane was higher: over 24%. A catalytic cycle involving NO2 as the C-H activating species is proposed.
