    Abstract

Performance parameters of a PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell are investigated in this paper. Tree-shaped vascular wall designs are modeled and simulated as gas distributors and current collectors. The bipolar plates are formed by squared panels with different vascular geometries that connect the center with the perimeter. The results of this study are shown for three different levels of bifurcation with optimized geometries. Numerical simulations were made in order to solve the Navier-Stokes equations and potentiostatic and galvanostatic fields for the PEM fuel cell. Results show how the global performance increases and the relative pressure drop through the flow channels diminishes as the number of bifurcation levels is increased.
