Abstract
A method for introducing lateral boundary conditions (LBC) perturbations that is designed specifically to help restore the loss of limited area model (LAM) ensemble forecast was studied. The LBC perturbations were designed to amplify with time while coherently propagating into the domain. Temporal interpolation of coarsely resolved external LBC fields has been shown to remove small-scale features from LAM solutions. The additional expense of applying LBC perturbations may be offset by the ability to integrate LAM ensembles over smaller domains.
