On the oxidation resistance of C/C composites obtained by chemical vapor infiltration of different carbon cloths

Abstract

The objective of this study was to (re)examine the oxidation resistance behavior of C/C composites, having in mind the (arguably insufficiently exploited) existence of excellent qualitative, and in some instances good quantitative, correlations between processing conditions (e.g., heat-treatment temperature), structure (e.g., crystallographic parameters) and reactivity of carbons. In particular, the issue of possible synergistic (or simple additive) effects of fiber and matrix reactivities on the oxidation behavior of the composites is addressed.
