Abstract

The physical case under consideration is the sudden melting of a two-dimensional semi-infinite thin vertical plate under a free convection condition in a viscous incompressible fluid. The unsteady temperature and flow developments after the disappearance of the heated plate revealed interesting unsteady phenomenon hitherto unknown. For instance, the tempeature field decays monotonically while the velocity field as a whole expands in the first stage of development reaching to a maximum before it starts to decrease. In the present study, the complete time history of the unsteady development of the melting plate free convection flow has been obtained by a finite difference numerical method. Results obtained are compared with the forced convection melting case in order to see the different behaviors and characteristics.
