Optical wavefront matching as a multi-frequency compliment to transformation optics

Abstract

The advent of Transformation Optics (TO) has led to a resurgence of interest in gradient-index (GRIN) optics. Furthermore, it has been noted that TO-derived lenses often possess better performance than those arrived at through more traditional GRIN design techniques. Due to the dispersive nature of optical materials, lenses are often combined into achromatic pairs to correct for chromatic aberrations. However, GRIN materials possess different dispersion behaviors than their homogeneous counterparts resulting in TO-derived solutions that only possess their intended behavior at the source design frequency. To mitigate this issue, a wavefront-matching (WFM) design paradigm is presented which overcomes this restriction and enables arbitrarily broadband transformations to be realized.
