    Abstract

The oxidative dehydrogenation of butane to butadiene and butene over V-Mg-O catalyst was studied by using inert membrane reactor (IMR) and conventional fixed-bed reactor (FBR). A ceramic membrane was modified by partially coating with glaze to obtain the desired permeation flux as an inert membrane. A multistage well-mixed flow mathematical model was developed to describe the oxidative dehydrogenation of butane in IMR. The results obtained from the model agreed with that obtained from the tests. The distribution of oxygen partial pressure, reaction rates, and transient selectivity of C4 dehydrogenation products (butadiene and butene) along the axis in the IMR and FBR were studied. The results from the model and the tests showed that the oxygen partial pressure in the catalyst bed decreased and the selectivity of C4 dehydrogenation products increased when the oxidative dehydrogenation of butane was carried out in IMR with ceramic membrane as air distributor.
