The data for this study came from the ECLS–K. For the ECLS-K, sponsored by the US Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, a nationally representative sample of kindergartners was selected in fall 1998, and these children have been followed through the fifth grade. The data included structured interviews with parents and teachers regarding different aspects of children’s achievement and well-being. In addition, NCES staff conducted direct child assessment, administered one-to-one, using standardized grade-appropriate test items for reading, mathematics and general knowledge. The present paper is based on a secondary data analysis of the public files from ECLS-K.

N2 - A large, nationally representative database of American elementary school students was used to quantitatively assess the complex ways in which race intersects with social class, affecting parenting strategies that in turn produce various educational outcomes among children. The determinants and consequences of parental practices associated with middle-class families - what Lareau terms 'concerted cultivation' - among White and African American students were examined. The findings reveal that cultural differences in child-rearing occur along class, race, and gender boundaries.
