Partial oxidation using air for in situ peroxide generation in diesel fuel for selective oxidation of refractory sulfur compounds

Abstract

Selective oxidation of sulfur compound in a model diesel fuel containing 9.5 wt% of butyl benzene, 2.0 wt% of tetralin, 3.5 wt% of 2-methylnpahthalene, 0.75 wt% of anthracene and 305 ppmw S of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene in 84.5 wt% of paraffin was conducted using air as an oxidant. Oxidation of model aromatic compounds like tetralin in decane was tested for its peroxide formation and the effect of butyl benzene and 2-methylnapthalene was also tested. There is an impeding effect on peroxide formation from tetralin in the presence of 2-methylnaphthalene, the same was not observed in the case of butyl benzene. Based on this study, a novel concept for selective air oxidation of diesel was proposed, which involves partial air oxidation of the light fraction of diesel (20%) to form peroxides which are used as oxidants to selectively oxidize the refractory sulfur compounds present in diesel.
