Abstract

With education under the microscope, some have suggested moving teacher preparation away from universities and into the hands of mentor teachers. But such extreme reform agendas have too narrow a focus. A more sophisticated solution unites rather than separates the work of two essential partners in the preparation of teachers: schools and universities. This model, comprised of both teacher preparation and inservice teacher learning, is known as the Professional Development School (PDS). Pennsylvania State University and the State College Area School District have had an ongoing relationship for 20 years and a recognized PDS for 15.
