Peter W. Alexander: Confederate chronicler & conscience

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

Peter W. Alexander ofthe Savannah (Ga.) Republican was one ofthefew Southern correspondence to provide consistent and reliable reportingfor virtually the entire Civil War. This study argues that not only was he one ofthe most skilled Southern journalists ofthe era, but that he stands out as a good example ofa jawing trend among responsiblejournalists, both North and South, who insisted on casting a critical eye on the government and the military in wartime, while still maintaining loyalty to their side. In this sense, he helped to define the professional role ofAmerican correspondents who would cover the important wars ofthe 20th century.
