Abstract

Pictorial representation of route direction by spatial chunking method is investigated. In this system speakers are provided to produce accompanying route directions without hearer feedback on the basis of a route presented in a spatially veridical map. The spatial chunking of elementary route segments is found to be helpful in the production of route directions. It is an efficient and robust conceptual process that is partly independent of preplanning.
