Abstract

The formation of engineered ferroelectric domains in two dimensions was studied using a continuum approach incorporating the long range elastic and electrostatic interactions. A simulation of the piezielectric properties of the engineered domain configurations was done, the results of which were compared with that of an analogous single domain state. It was found that the low field piezoelectric constants for the configurations were very close to those obtained for the corresponding single domain state. It was demonstrated that the domain walls acted as nucleation sites for an electric field induced structural transition.
