Abstract

This paper reports a multiplexed “sample-in-answer-out” diagnostic system for species-specific molecular detection of malaria (P. falciparum and P. vivax) in field settings. The multiplexed system aims to address the need for sensitive and species-specific detection of malaria in field clinics. The multiplexed diagnostic system incorporates a ready-to-use reagent compact disk (with multiple independent species-specific reaction units) and a portable analyzer. Using whole blood as a testing sample, the multiplexed system can deliver fast (40 mins from raw sample to answer), sensitive (~1.6 parasites/μL), and specific (P. falciparum and P. vivax) molecular answers without laboratory infrastructures.
