Abstract

The popular Sudoku puzzles are Latin squares comprising of an array with entries drawn from distinct symbols in such a way that no symbol is repeated in any row or column. This feature can be exploited to design stepped-frequency radar waveforms to achieve high range and Doppler resolution. This paper computes the radar ambiguity function of typical waveforms derived from Sudoku puzzles in order to demonstrate its resolution characteristics in range and Doppler. In addition, the mutual orthogonality of different symbols results in very low cross-Ambiguity functions, indicating that signals derived from different symbols do not interfere with one another when operating in close proximity. Such mutually orthogonal waveforms are also ideal for use in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar applications. The performance of the Sudoku-based waveforms is compared to waveforms based on Costas and random sequences.
