REACTION OF HIGH AND LOW REACTIVITY COKE WITH CO-CO//2 MIXTURES

Abstract

The mechanisms of reaction of CO/CO//2 gas mixtures with two different types of coke which had roughly identical physical properties but different reactivities on the Bethlehem reactivity scale are discussed. The difference in the reactivity of the two types of coke can be attributed primarily to the difference in the rates of desorption of oxygen from active sites on the coke surface. Analytical treatment of the data based on a porous solid model indicates that for the size of coke used in cupola furnaces, the reaction rate is influenced by both the chemical reaction and the transport of CO//2 through the porous coke.
