Abstract

Wearable technologies have become ubiquitous in our daily lives, providing unprecedented degrees of freedom with the aim of improving quality of life, especially for health monitoring. Wearable antennas offer the potential to realize large SWaP (size, weight, and power) reduction over conventional antennas for their ability to achieve comparable or even superior functionalities in ultrathin and flexible packages. This study presents the most notable works and advancements in this field while placing a significant focus on antennas with explicit practical applications in the emerging areas of wireless body area networks (WBAN) and Internet-of-Things (IoT). As illustrative examples, we primarily focus here on a discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of three textile wearable antennas including a full-duplex antenna, an omnidirectional armband antenna and an end-fire leaky wave antenna.
