Abstract

This session will cover recoverable manufacturing issues. Recoverable manufacturing includes remanufacturing of used products, overhaul, and technical upgrades, as well as repair of failed units. Recoverable manufacturing extends product life cycles, conserves materials and energy, and is increasingly being mandated by laws and regulations in many countries. The unique characteristics of this environment, problems faced, and the current state of research will be discussed. Discussion will also focus on what future research agenda should be. Current research in this area has mainly focused on subsystems of recoverable manufacturing systems such as design for disassembly, or on the economics of parts/materials recovery or disposal and recycling. There has been some recent work on various components of the manufacturing planning and control systems needed to effectively manage operations in this environment. However, there exists a need to integrate this fragmented research into a well defined manufacturing planning and control system. This need has been recognized by most researchers in this area. The panel will also discuss how such a manufacturing planning and control system should be developed.
