Abstract

The present study addresses the relation between the amplitude of different event-related potential (ERP) components and non-verbal intelligence assessed by Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices in children at 9, 10 and 11 years. The same 26 children were measured once a year. Overall this longitudinal study replicates positive correlations between ERP amplitudes in children and Raven scores. However, when comparing these correlations between measurement sessions there was a marked shift from principal correlations with an early ERP component, related to perceptual processes at age 9, to correlations with later ERP components, related to memory and evaluation processes at ages 10 and 11. Possible developmental implications of these findings are discussed.
