A remote sensing project, for a senior technical elective telecommunications course in the electrical engineering technology, Baccalureate Program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, is presented. The characteristics of the project include, the project used as a GPS sensor and cellular telephone to allow GPS data to be accessed from the remote site. The remote site consist of a dedicated laptop PC with one RS-232 port, interfaced alternately to the GPS sensor and the cellular telephone. It has been found that, students felt that the approach was an excellent project for the course, and their level of interest in GPS and cell phone technology either improved or significantly improved as a result of this project.
