Removal of CO2 and H2S from Various Gas Streams by a Two-stage Process with Nanoporous-material-supported Polymer Sorbents

Abstract

A novel NMSPS has been developed for removing CO2, H 2S and COS. On the basis of its exceptional function, an innovative two-stage process for removing CO2 and H2S, respectively, from gas streams was proposed and conducted in a bench-scale apparatus. As combining the advantages of the high surface area of the nanoporous material and the high absorption capacity and selectivity of the H2S/CO 2-philic polymer in NMSPS, the developed sorbent and process exhibit some potential advantages: 1) able to remove H2S and COS in the gas to at least less than 60 ppbv, 2) higher sorption capacity and selectivity for CO2, H2S and COS, 3) higher sorption-desorption rate, 4) working at mild conditions and easier for regeneration, and 5) able to remove and recover CO2 and H2S, respectively. All these advantages make the sorbents and the process not only beneficial to the large-scale removal of CO2, H2S and COS from gas streams in industry, but also suitable to on-board or on-site removal of CO2, H2S and COS from the reformate or biogas for hydrogen production and other applications. It may allow the removal of CO2, H2S and COS to be conducted more energy efficiently, economically and environmentally friendly.
