Abstract

Cold spray deposition presents the opportunity for final shape forming of ODS (oxide dispersoid strengthened) stainless steels, particularly for use with pre-alloyed GARS (gas atomization reaction synthesis) precursor powders due to possible increased dislocation densities and oxide nucleation sites, that can increase strength. GARS powder processing offers the opportunity to reduce current high-cost and lengthy mechanical alloying methods for existing ferritic ODS alloys. Including Al in this ODS alloy design introduces possible applications in existing and advanced nuclear reactor power plants and in high-efficiency fossil-fueled power plants due to capability for alumina scale formation and nano-oxide dispersoids that are stable up to 1,000°C. Results of preliminary cold spray experiments of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic stainless steel on flat substrates will be reported, evaluating ODS ferritic stainless steel properties, including deposit densification from enhanced sintering tendencies. Microstructure and microhardness analyses for heat treated and as-cold sprayed samples will be presented.
