Abstract

Seismic evaluation of one of the most critical bridges in Clark County was performed in this study. The evaluation focused on the performance of the bridge columns under seismic loads in both the transverse and longitudinal directions. The method used for the bridge analysis in this study was the nonlinear static procedure (NSP) introduced by FEMA-356 for the evaluation of buildings. This method was modified to apply on bridges. The acceptance criteria set for the evaluation was the Immediate Occupancy (IO) performance level. Using such performance level was due to the high importance of the bridge and accordingly it is expected to be fully operational after major earthquake events. It was found that deficiencies in bridge performance are attributed to the fact that it was designed and detailed according to older code provisions.
