Abstract
This paper reports a study of the effects of heat treatment and chemical composition variables on the formation and distribution of secondary graphite, the effects of secondary graphite on impact toughness, and the specific mechanism of secondary graphitization in quenched and tempered ductile cast iron. Experiments were performed on commercial ductile cast iron, alloyed ductile cast iron produced in the laboratory, and on various other cast irons and steels. It has been found that only heat treatment variables that affect the morphology of the martensite formed upon quenching affect the morphology and distribution of the secondary graphite formed upon tempering. The complex mechanisms of secondary graphitization from quenched structures is discussed.
