Abstract

The problems of racial separatism and identity politics faced by author Michael Bérubé, a professor of English at Pennsylvania State University at University Park, during teaching, are discussed. Some of his students are insistent that membership in the American community requires one to subordinate his or her ethnic-national origin. According to Michael, this problem is a part of the current critique of multiculturalism. He also tries to convince his students that social contracts should not be based on cultural homogeneity.
