Abstract

This chapter gives the discussion on smart composition materials systems and its potential use in engineering application. Smart materials were described as reactive materials, whereas, their properties can be changed with respect to environment changes and back to the original states. In the biological systems, the smart composite materials were used as sensor, actuators and real-time processers, which were acting as nervous system, muscles, and brain, respectively. It was found that the in-line Bragg grating (FBG) sensors offer distinct advantages over other fiber-optic sensing techniques.
