A comprehensive picture of self and collective motion of four saturated hydrocarbon polymers is presented. The results cover five decades in time, from 0.01 to 1000 ps, encompassing both the fast initial decay and the slower process that becomes dominant for t>1 ps. This paper covers a range of momentum transfers from the level of bond lengths to chain dimensions. This range of data could only be obtained from neutron scattering by piercing together portions of the decay curves obtained from different spectrometers.
