As the properties of high-Tc superconducting tapes improve, practical design considerations require more detailed analysis. Here we report investigations of the stability of high-Tc superconducting tapes operating at 4.2 K. As a result of the broad range of temperature during a transition and the strong temperature dependence of the material properties of both the superconductor and the stabilizer, the finite element method (FEM) is used to solve the heat conduction equation. Analytic solutions for particular operating modes are also included.
