State of water in disulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers and a perfluorosulfonic acid copolymer (nafion) and its effect on physical and electrochemical properties

Copolymerized sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers and the standard perfluorinated copolymer, Nafion, were studied. The state of water in the copolymers was quantified by both pressure differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and 1H pulse NMR techniques. In addition to DSC and NMR results, methanol permeation and electro-osmotic drag data were considered were considered as additional examples of properties that are directly affected by the state of water.
